APRIL 2009 ISSUE
Vijayabalan a/l Velu, Human Resource Manager, Malay-Sino Chemical Industries Sdn Bhd (MSCI)

I started my career in August 1998 as a Human Resource Officer at Hovid Berhad (pharmaceuticals industry). I was responsible for all matters pertaining to recruitment and training. During my time at Hovid, I'm particularly proud of my work in
implementing psychology

tests for new recruits (below Officer level) and the implementation of orientation training for those below Officer level. In December 2000, I was then offered the post of Administration/Personnel Executive in Malay-Sino Chemical Industries Sdn Bhd (MSCI). MSCI manufactures chlor-alkali products and is within the Chemical Division of the Batu Kawan Berhad (BKB) Group. Here, I gained valuable experience particularly in dealing with Industrial Relations and Compensation & Benefits (C&B) issues. I think that exposure has led to my being assigned subsequently, to handle Collective Agreement (CA) matters not only within MSCI but other companies within the Chemical Division.

Promoted in January 2009 to Human Resource Manager, I am now responsible for the entire Chemical Division of the BKB group and my focus areas include professional and personal development of all employees, the development of effective succession plans and awareness raising among the employees on their roles and responsibilities.
