We spoke recently with John Baldoni, an internationally recognised leadership author, coach and speaker. Named one of the "30 Most Influential Leadership Gurus” by Leadership Gurus International in 2007 and a featured contributor for Harvard Business Publishing, John shares with us some ideas on getting things right and achieving success.

HRM : In your opinion, how do you think great leaders are able to get great results?

Baldoni : Leaders create conditions for people to succeed. Results being with purpose: what you want to achieve. From there you move to vision : where do you want to take the organization? You then challenge the organisation to get behind you, which we call alignment. Execution and discipline are essential to holding people accountable. Risk is necessary; it generates innovation. Every organisation needs to think and do more for its stakeholders. Results are the outcome of this process.

HRM : How do managers work to create conditions for success in the workspace?

Baldoni : Leaders put people into a position to succeed. They hire the right people and put them in the right places. You communicate, delegate, supervise and recognise with an eye toward unleashing an individual's talents and skills.

HRM : How do great leaders push to get things right?

Baldoni : You do this by setting the right example, acting the role of a leader and handling the tough issues. Example is paramount. When people see the leader doing right, they will be more inclined to follow that example.
