INSIGHT
Living a Quality Lifestyle
by JC Francis Carvalho

Jul 09 | In my years of research, analysis and programming, I've discovered that we largely take our life for granted. I've looked at lifestyles, customs, dietary varieties, our traditions and belief systems, the fads that have come and gone, treatments we all look at to solve our problems and I see that people largely have the same needs, desires and cravings regardless of race, creed or religion.

We all look for the basic essence of life whether its health or fitness or even success in sports and wellness. We want longevity. But at the centre of it, we need a level of self-realisation. We need to come to terms with the fact that this is our lives we're dealing with.

Health is not a photo-finish of us in professional or academic excellence dress code. Health is about our mind being free of mental and emotional stress and our body being free of illness. Fitness is about our mind and body coping and at our best, we achieve a level of excellence in our physical performance. We are agile, our cardiovascular fitness is at its optimum, we're strong and powerful and we possess speed and endurance. Our problems stem from the fact that most of us do not treat health and fitness as a lifestyle.

We're not talking about being fanatical about fitness or health. It's firstly about a realisation of where you see your life. Do you want to stay healthy or are you leaving it as a question of fate? We all know that the physical body takes many shapes. That's why some of us are fat, some are thin, some pear shaped, spoon or ruler shaped. Or even dual body types. The question is whether we accept this as the end result.

Medically, we're talking about these shapes as endomorphs, mesomorphs, and ectomorphs. And the fitness level for each body type varies which means the question that we need to ask ourselves is whether we want a better physique.

There's a reason for why some people are prone to disease and others not. The reason is simple! Our wellness is to a large extent affected by genetics. It's hereditary. Our lifespan is thereafter affected by choices in our lifestyle and how we seek to protect and enhance our health. The combination of regular intake of unhealthy food combined with a stressful lifestyle will undoubtedly affect our level of well-being. Despite medical advice and how knowledgeable we may be about our choices, the reality is that we tend to use our taste buds to make our choices when it comes to food and drink. It is absolutely essential for us to use our mind to make the changes necessary for a quality lifestyle.

Simply put, we need to put health first by maintaining a well-balanced and nutritious diet, drinking lots of water, getting adequate sleep, adjusting our lifestyle and generally being aware and mindful of our genetic and fatal diseases.

Embracing fitness as a lifestyle doesn't require as much of you as you think. Look at it as an investment that will prove its rewards when you need it the most. We only need 3 hours a week to work towards regenerating our body. It is the combination of your mind and body in your approach to health and fitness that produces the ultimate force - your spirit. This spirit is your inner strength.
