Transformational
Recruiting with Social Media
With
the internet now so integral to how we work, communicate
and collaborate, it is easy to be swayed by all
the trappings. However, technology is a tool best
mastered so that the focus can be on the real work
at hand. Simon Heaton talks to us about how LinkedIn
has helped transform the way in which he recruits.
By Peter Raj |
While
most of us have used social media in our personal
lives, for entertainment, communication and personal
gain, there are those who are using it to organisational
advantage. Advances in technology and the zeal
with which most have embraced social media have
only helped in social media’s reach and
integration into our lives. We talk to Simon Heaton,
Head of Executive Recruiting for Walmart Asia
who brings a unique perspective to the discussion,
having spent time on both sides of the fence.
He has worked a significant number of years in
recruiting, in third party agencies and has recently
made the switch, leading an in-house recruiting
team.

Rising Star
Felicity
Poe believes that HR is sometimes a balancing act.
Well achieved, this balance could result in a position
with much influence within the business.
By Rowena
Morais |
“Within
HR, we can’t sit back and wait for people
to come to us, we need to be proactive, forward
thinking and look for opportunities. HR professionals
need to have a broader range of business skills
to show the business that they truly do understand
the challenges they are facing and HR can play
a key role in working through these,” Felicity
Poe asserted when I asked her for advice to young,
up and coming HR professionals.

Effective
Business Partnering
Jaizal
Kamar bin Jalaludin talks to Rowena Morais
about why HR is no longer the exclusive domain of
HR practitioners and asks whether we know where
our true value lies.
Oct
2011 | What
does HR make of their traditional role and how can
we best respond to the oft-repeated criticism that
we lack a true connection to the business?
|
W
e think of business partnering and the value we
create through this. We think about the good that
it brings - a greater collaborative spirit, enhanced
alignment and the development of a tight yet cohesive
vision. This cannot merely be a re-labeling exercise.
When one starts to talk in terms of HR business
partnering it signals a significant change in
how the organisation views HR’s contribution
and a change in how relationships are defined.

Crafting

Crafting employee development experiences
Uthaya Prakash shares his journey as a learning
and development professional
By Isabella Chan
July
2011 | Uthaya Prakash has spent the last seven years
wholly immersed in consulting, training and structuring
effective learning and development programmes.
|
Ultimately,
any learning and development professional wants
to create the best employee development experience
possible. Yet, the best such experience probably
means different things to different people. How
do you craft such experiences? What should you
focus on? How do you work on developing the right
balance of skills, knowledge and behaviours to
support your programmes?

Critical
Gaps Presented by the New Professional
We
need a more holistic approach to integrating new
talent
by Rowena Morais
April
2011 | The idea that the typical candidate currently
entering the workforce is sorely lacking in basic
work etiquette, language and communication skills
as well as critical thinking ability has been mooted
for some time now in industry circles.
|
|
There
appears to be a big gap between the skills presented
by the school-leaver as well as new graduates
and the expectations of employers today.

The
Critical Nature of Strategic Workforce Planning
It's not about planning for every
job, it is planning for critical ones.
Oct
10 | Industry
Week reported in February this year that strategic
workforce planning was emerging as a top priority
with up to 28% of best-in-class organisations
holding the CEO or the Board of Directors as primarily
accountable for workforce planning. Organisations
around the world are constantly plagued by an
inability to effectively source specialised talent.

A

by Rowena Morais
Jul
10 | The
public sector, much like its counterpart, is on
an international platform, sustained by different
practices and a diverse range of policies and attitudes.
|
|
Across the globe, a multitude of approaches is taken
on a range of issues, amongst which is the issue
of remuneration. For some, this is determined largely
by legislation; for others, it might be a central
coordinating body. |

we face or whether there was a completely different
bias in the US. |
