Kensington and Chelsea College Wins Top Regional Diversity Award

Sep 2010 UK | Kensington and Chelsea College scooped a prestigious regional award in September for its approach to diversity in the work place. The college won the award for ‘Diversity in Action’ as part of a series of high profile awards ceremonies held across England, Scotland and Wales by Jobcentre Plus.

The Awards celebrated and recognised innovative approaches to recruitment and the achievements of companies, partners and individuals who have worked with Jobcentre Plus in the last year. Despite fierce competition the college was judged as being “the employer that has shown the most innovative and inclusive approach to recruit and retain a balanced workforce, reflective of the local community.”

The award praised and officially acknowledged the college’s diverse workforce from all over the world including a strong representation from Britain, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, in addition to employees being able to speak a large number of languages as well as English – many of the languages being those reflective of the local community.

Judges also noted the college’s involvement in a number of projects and partnerships to maximise work opportunities for unemployed young people, people with disabilities and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The award was presented by Elizabeth Eddy from the NHS Confederation to Philip Shortt, the college’s Employment & Skills Manager.
Chelsie de Bohun Chittendon, one of the beneficiaries of a college project to help disadvantaged people back into work, also went on to win an award - earning the college its second win of the night.

Chelsie won the ‘New Recruit of the Year’ title after the college helped her find a job role as a peer mentor, as well as help train her for it.

Philip Shortt said: “The college’s student body is incredibly diverse in age, background and culture and it’s something we’re really proud of. Our workforce is the same. It feels great to be given an award that reflects our commitment to making Kensington and Chelsea College a college that is fully inclusive and for everyone!”
